Greetings From Arizona!

Thanks to everyone who has been writing and asking about GG.  We spent a couple of days in Scottsdale seeing her "famous" and "good-looking" new cardiologist at the Mayo Clinic with much success.

While we were going through the machinations of registering, filling out paperwork, checking into the hotel, having meals, vigilantly watching her take over 15 different pills a day, having tests done, blood drawn, etc...  something really neat occured to me.

My grandmother is a very elegant and lovely woman.  She takes great care with her appearance.  She takes great care with the way she treats people.  She goes out of her way to make others feel good about themselves.  No matter how she is feeling, she always has time to pay a compliment to a stranger.  She always takes the time to smile and listen to other people.

And she does it because that's the right thing to do.  To not do so would make her uncomfortable.  When she hasn't been feeling well of late, it takes extra effort on her part to pay these compliments and attend to others.  But she does it.  And the good news is, now because of the love and concern of others (you know who you are, Dr. & Mrs. H., Texas, and all of my friends, Internet and otherwise) she is back to feeling much, much better.  And because of that, she is spreading sunshine at such a breakneck pace that it's exhausting even for her.

Now, as for the elegant appearance.  I have been inventorying her jewelry selections for the last few days, and I can safely say that we should all care this much about how we look.

Simple, elegant, well-planned, yes.  But effortless and easy.  And welcoming.

GG almost exclusively wears a 22K gold granulation-bead ring and star pendant she bought over 30 years ago when she was living in Somalia.  (photos to come soon...  I am camera-free...  but Trey might be coming for a visit and he might bring the camera...  and the Pugs...  and of course, himself...  sigh)

My grandfather was a petroleum engineer, and the company for whom he once worked sent him and some other engineers to live in Mogadishu for a couple of years in the early 70s.  At the time GG was, well, the wife of a petroleum engineer.

She tells colorful stories of Somali craftsmen selling goods in markets, in homes, at special parties for diplomats.  She tells funny stories of the Somalis and Ethiopians and Sudanese who worked in their home and who were some of the most gracious people she ever knew.  She tells stories of another petroleum engineer and his wife's pack of Rhodesian Ridgebacks who would lick her from her toes to her nose when she visited their home for ex-pat barbecues and card games.

She tells stories of how, back then, she always had the desire to paint the things she saw.  And later, after her husband passed away, she did.  Within a year of learning watercoloring herself, she was teaching lessons in her home in West Texas.

So you see, that although it can be a little taxing to travel and deal with doctors and so forth, it can be very rewarding, too.

What A Kroc! (Of Fabulous Jewels, That Is)

1646_335The venerable New York auction house of Christie's is always selling something good, whether it be art, the decorative arts, complete estates or jewels.  And the upcoming sale on April 11 is certainly no slouch.

Among the items being sold in the "Magnificent Jewels" sale, are a number of pieces from the estate of Mrs. Joan B. Kroc, widow of the founder of McDonald's Restaurants.

In addition to being a magnanimous philanthropist, Mrs. Kroc was quite a collector as well.  Lots 321 through 335 are part of her estate and can be seen by perusing Christie's online catalog for the sale.  Take a look, there is some amazing stuff in there besides hers.

Of the fifteen pieces in the sale, all come from either Harry Winston, Bulgari or Van Cleef & Arpels and all have recently been reevaluated for quality and authenticity by either the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) or the AGTA (American Gem Trade Association).  The GIA verifies the quality and certification assignations of the diamonds and the natural color of the diamonds.  The AGTA Gem Testing Center verifies the origin and natural color of the sapphires and emeralds.

Basically, Ms. Kroc had impeccable taste and, it seems, a fondness for yellow diamonds, emeralds and sapphires.  If this collection is a reflection of her taste, it was truly remarkable.  A seemingly endless source of funding didn't hurt, either.

The Big Bird (my pet name for large canary diamonds) seen in the above picture is a beautiful canary diamond necklace by Harry Winston.  The 42.13 carat fancy yellow intense pear-shaped diamond is detachable from the two-row pear and round brilliant cut diamond necklace.  Such details enable the wearer to have, you know, options when deciding what to wear.

I can just imagine the dignified lady ruminating in her dressing gown, Now, do I wear the Big Bird (lot 335) tonight?  Or do I let him rest in the blue leather Harry Winston cage?  Hmmmmm.  But I have such a nice Little Bird (lot 329) to wear with it...  or I could leave Big Bird and Little Bird home in their cages and bring out the Wollman Skating Rink (lot 334) and wear all white diamonds and call it a night...  oh, whatever shall I do?

It is set in platinum and 18-karat yellow gold (you want your canaries set in yellow gold so as not to detract from their color) and is 15.5 inches in length.  That's basically choker length for most women.

How much, you ask?

Christie's expects this lot to fetch anywhere between $1,000,000 to $1,500,000.

Which, for us lay people, is approximately 333,333 to 500,000 McRib Deluxe Sandwiches.  (Ewwww!)

And yes, I'd like fries with that.

Must-Have Jewelry For Every Woman

If you're interested in "basic pieces," may I suggest that we all should probably have:

1.  simple pearls
2.  some kind of gold (yellow or white) chain from which to hang something
3.  diamond stud earrings (any size works)
4.  a good watch
and
5.  whatever jewelry accompanied your betrothal if you are engaged or married

The rest is all fancy, it's fun, it's gravy. It's collecting and indulging and loads of fun.

Also it's nice to get something that just makes you FEEL GOOD when you wear it. Maybe something in your favorite color? Some people love silver Western stuff and turquoise. Some like sapphires. Costume jewelry. Cubic zirconium! Viva Diamonique! Whatever, we're all individuals. I love green; it's my thing. Green... and red comes a close second place.

I have a green tourmaline that makes me smile just thinking about it.  Wearing it is even better!

Get thee to the shops!
